Tom Fortner is director of the UF Health Science Center Office of News & Communications, where he oversees internal and external news communications and relations with the news media. From 1986 to 2004, he held a similar position at East Carolina University and its affiliated health system based in Greenville, North Carolina, where he also was responsible for marketing clinical services for the ECU School of Medicine. He began his career as a reporter and editor for community newspapers in North Carolina. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master’s in business administration from ECU. He is a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Group on Institutional Advancement, currently serving on its steering committee as chair-elect. He is a member of the board of directors of UF's public radio station, WUFT-FM.
